The Big Debate
Is
your newsletter effective relationship-building or an unwise self-indulgence?

Strong views both ways, but a convincing majority favour consideration for the donor and desisting from a further ask. Why then do so many fundraisers persist in doing it?

The facts on how people give: No 1
‘As presidential elections near, many organisations are concerned about the effect political fundraising has on their results. While some advocacy and issue groups may feel the effect, I agree with the Target Analysis authors who cite Giving USA 2007 and note that individuals gave a total of $229 billion to charity in 2007, which was 2,390 times the total raised by all candidates running for president that same year. While 70 per cent of the US population gives to charity every year, only one to two per cent of the population gives to presidential candidates or campaigns’.

Roger Craver, The Agitator

The facts on how people give: No 2
Stephen Lee told a story about the UK’s ‘One Per Cent’ club, a club supposedly made up of commercial organisations who give away one per cent of their profits. It was a hilarious story, because the club members didn’t actually meet a key part of the membership criteria – giving one per cent of profit away! He called for charities to refuse corporate donations until companies stop taking the mickey out of the whole corporate/ community partnership business.
